West Lake, located in the west of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, is one of the first national key scenic spots in China and one of China's top ten scenic spots. It is one of the main ornamental freshwater lakes in mainland China, and is one of the few World Heritage Sites and the only lake cultural heritage in China.

The West Lake is surrounded by mountains on three sides, covering an area of 6.39 square kilometers, about 2.8 kilometers wide from east to west, 3.2 kilometers long from north to south, and nearly 15 kilometers around the lake.

The lake is separated by Gushan, Baidi, Sudi and Yanggong Dikes. According to the size of the area, there are five water faces, namely, West Lake, Xili Lake, Beili Lake, Xiaonan Lake and Yuehu.

Su Di and Bai Dike cross the lake, Xiao Wei Chau The three small islands of Huxinting and Mekongdun stand in the heart of the West Lake. The Leifeng Pagoda in Xizhao Mountain and the Baoding Tower in the Gem Mountain are separated by the lake, thus forming “One Mountain, Two Towers, Three Islands, The basic pattern of the Three Dykes and Five Lakes.

Cloud Dwelling and Bamboo Path

This scenic spot, located at the Yunqi Cove at the southern foot of Wuyun Mountain, is a mountain cove landscape with luxuriant woods and has been famous for its remote mountains and ancient temples, bamboo path and sound of chime stone.

The Emperor Kangxi has been to Yunqi four times, composing poems and inscribing tablets, and he granted the name “Royal Bamboo” to a big bamboo, for which the magistrate in Zhejiang built “Imperial Book Pavilion” and “Royal Bamboo Pavilion” in memory of that event. After 43 years, the Emperor Qianlong went to Hangzhou during his inspection tour of the south and went to Yunqi six times.

After the waning days of Qing Dynasty, the Yunqi bamboo forest was repeatedly destroyed and didn’t have the original appearance. During the time of Hangzhou falling into enemy’s hands in the Anti-Japanese War, many bamboo forests were cut down and they are almost extinct. After 1950, under the caring of Hangzhou Municipal Garden Department, the bamboo forests were gradually rejuvenated, temples were renovated and tea houses were opened.

In the present bamboo-lined path at Yunqi, green bamboos are shady, brooks utter the ding dong sound, incomparably cool and refreshing. The paths wind and go deep into the forest, the murmuring clear brooks go down along the path and the sweet and agreeable chirrup comes from the forest, which makes the whole environment quiet and refreshing.

吳山天風(fēng)Heaven Wind over Wushan Mountain

The mountain, located at the southeast of the West Lake, is 94 meters high with elegant scenery, queer rocks, clear springs and beautiful caves. There are Chenghuang Pavilion on the mountain, which is elegant and above the clouds, and towering and magnificent. Beside the mountain path, there a group of rocks with various shapes, which are exactly like the Chinese Zodiac, so they are called as “Chinese Zodiac Rocks”.

At the top of Wushan Mountain, there is “River and Lake Huiguan Pavilion” built there. Standing in it, you can have a panoramic view of Qiantang River and the West Lake. There are the relics of Shanmao Temple left at the boulevard leading to the Yunju Mountain beside the Pavilion. Beside the relics is there the manuscript: The First Peak—Wushan Mountain, left by Chu His, a Neo-Confucianist in South Song Dynasty.

In the Spring and Autumn Period, the southern boundary of Wu State was made up of more than ten mountain tops, that is Ziyang, Yunju, Jingdi, Qingping, Baolian, Qibao, Shifo, Baoyue, Camel, Emei, etc, which form an arch hill in a southwest to northeast strike. All the small mountain tops are generally called as Wushan Mountain.

The Wushan Mountain is not high, but because it inserts into the downtown, it overlooks the street and alleys in its east, north and northwest and look far into the Qiantang River and flat fields at its both banks in the south. Ascending on the Wushan Mountain still can give you sense of soaring and surpassing and is able to hold all the beautiful scenery of rivers, mountains, lakes and cities in Hangzhou in sights.

Precious Stone Hill is the shield of the north bank of the West Lake. The color of rocks on the hill is ochre red, and there are a lot of shining red pebbles in the rock mass. Once they are exposed to the sunshine, the whole mountain is covered with amazing colors. Especially when the mountain is bathed in the rosy clouds of dawn or the sunset glow, the rocks are particularly dazzling, as if countless precious stones are shining and glimmering, from which the name of Precious Stone Hill is obtained

Gem Bathed in Flowing Rosy Clouds

Baochu Pagoda stands out majestically at the east top of Precious Stone Hill. Its former structure is nine-level masonry-timber structure, but now is solid pattern of bricklaying. The pagoda imi tates the original pattern of that in Qing Dynasty when it was reconstructed in 1933. Although it can’t be ascended, its beautiful appearance and outstanding and important position make it become an impressive landmark of the attractions in the West Lake.

The Harbin Ice Festival

The Harbin Ice Festival, established in 1985, is held annually from January 5 and lasts for over one month. Harbin is the capital city of Heilongjiang Province and this is China's original and greatest ice artwork festival, attracting hundreds of thousands of local people and visitors from all over the world.

The city's location in northeast China accounts for its arctic climate which provides abundant natural ice and snow. Subsequently, the 'Ice City' of Harbin is recognized as the cradle of ice and snow art in China and is famous for its exquisite and artistic ice and snow sculptures. The fabulous Ice Lantern Festival was the forerunner of the current festival and is still the best loved part of the overall event in the opinion of all who come to Harbin each year.

The Derivation of the Ice Lantern

The first Ice lanterns were a winter-time tradition in northeast China. During the Qing Dynasty(1644 - 1911), the local peasants and fishermen often made and used ice lanterns as jack-lights during the winter months. At that time these were made simply by pouring water into a bucket that was then put out in the open to freeze. It was then gently warmed before the water froze completely so that the bucket-shaped ice could be pulled out. A hole was chiseled in the top and the water remaining inside poured out creating a hollow vessel. A candle was then placed inside resulting in a windproof lantern that gained great popularity in the region around Harbin.

From then on, people made ice lanterns and put them outside their houses or gave them to children to play with during some of the traditional festivals. Thus the ice lantern began its long history of development. With novel changes and immense advancement in techniques, today we can marvel at the various delicate and artistic ice lanterns on display.

Today's Ice Lantern

Nowadays, ice lantern in broad sense refers to a series of plastic arts using ice and snow as raw material combining ice artworks with colored lights and splendid music. The specific patterns of ice lantern include ice and snow sculptures, ice flowers, ice architectures and so on.

Harbin Ice Festival provides the visitors each year a whole new world of ice and snow. The best collections of ice artworks are exhibited in three main places: the Sun Island Park, Harbin Ice and Snow World, and Zhaolin Park.

The Sun Island Park is the site of the Snow Sculpture Exposition displaying a wonderful snow world. It has the world's largest indoor ice and snow art museum and it opens to the public from November every year.

Harbin Ice and Snow World came into being in 1999 and is one of the world's largest ice architecture parks. The inspiration for the ice and snow sculptures there usually is derived from traditional Chinese fairy tales or world famous architectures such as the Great Wall, the Egyptian Pyramids, etc.

Zhaolin Park is a 'must see' during the Harbin Ice Festival because it has a traditional program that shows the most excellent ice lanterns. With water, lights and the natural ice from the Songhua River running through Harbin as the material, the ice lanterns are made by freezing water, piling up ice or snow, then carving, enchasing, decorating, etc. The ice lantern park touring activities have been held here annually since 1963 and is said to be one of the most wonderful 35 tourist attractions in China. There are numerous pieces of ice artworks in the park arranged in groups according to different themes depicting Chinese classic masterworks, European folktales and customs and so on. A great variety of objects such as buildings, gardens, flowers, waterfalls, European-styled churches, lions, tigers, dragons are carved from ice. In the daytime, the ice sculptures are magnificent and verisimilitude. Moreover, with the interspersion of the sparkling colored lights embedded in the sculptures at night, the park becomes a glorious and amazing ice world.

Today, Harbin Ice Festival is not only an exposition of ice and snow art, but also an annual cultural event for international exchange. Every year, there are many ice sculpture experts, artists and fans from America, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Russia, China, etc. gathering in Harbin to participate ice sculpting competitions and to communicate with each other in the ice and snow world. Also, Harbin ice lanterns have been exhibited in most of China's main cities as well as in many countries in Asia, Europe, North America, Africa and Oceania. For more than 40 years, Harbin's natural resource of ice and snow has been fully explored to provide joy and fun for visitors to the city. Now during the festival, many sporting competitions are also popular including ice-skating, sledding and so on. Weddings, parties and other entertainments are now very much a feature of this ice world, adding their own contribution to the celebrations of this great festival of art, culture, sports and tourism.
